Working Table F

Working Table F was chaired by Nicaragua. Keynote statements were presented by Slovenia (EU) and Peru (LAC).

Delegations engaged in a fruitful and profound dialogue on economic and social issues. Participants coincided that the people and the regions of the European Union and LAC were at a crucial juncture. Therefore, they were committed to a socially responsible globalization as a basis for the EU-LAC partnership.

Delegations recognized the need for an increase in state efficiency and cost-effectiveness proceeding towards a ”slimmer state”. They also underlined the importance to stimulate the private sector, thus enabling it to assume the role as a driving force in development. There was agreement that companies had to act in a socially responsible manner with regard to investment.

Participants highlighted that trade was the source of growth for everybody. The objective of integration consisted in significantly reducing poverty. If governments fail to do so, they would run the risk that poverty jeopardized democracy.

Delegations felt that if governments failed to reduce poverty and to maintain democratic governance, they would lay the basis for the return of easy populism. People want access to education in order to improve their lives and to live in dignity.

Democracy can only be guaranteed by reducing poverty and providing qualitative education.

The group coincided that regional integration was a key element for stability, economic growth and investment. In that sense, they welcomed the decision to launch negotiations on an Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union, including the creation of a free trade area. Additionally, it was expressed that for the advancement of South American integration, possible solutions could be found in the framework of the South American Community of Nations.

Some delegations mentioned the importance of further progress in the WTO negotiations.

Participants reaffirmed their determination to promote equitable and sustained economic growth in order to create more and better jobs, and to fight poverty and social exclusion. The need was recognized to follow-up on responsible public policies that ensure a better distribution of wealth and of the benefits of economic growth.

Delegations were firmly committed to fighting against poverty, inequality and exclusion.

They agreed to confront in a joint effort the problem of scarce energy resources by means of renewable resources and energy saving programmes.

In the name of all participants of the working table and in particular in the name of the Central American governments, the chair congratulated the Government of Austria for its excellent organization, attention, and friendship.
