"The Austrian Presidency wishes to make clear the whole spectrum of issues – from combating poverty, social cohesion, human rights, economic relations and cultural cooperation to multilateral cooperation in the framework of the United Nations", Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik said in the run up to the IV EU-Latin America/Caribbean Summit in Vienna.
Before the meeting of foreign ministers of the EU, Latin America and the Caribbean, Minister Plassnik will announce the main priorities of the summit at her opening press conference at 12 o’clock on Thursday, 11 May 2006 in the Presidency briefing room in the Reed Messe in Vienna.
For the first time, the EU-Latin America/Caribbean Summit is being held in one of the UN headquarters. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan will be attending his first EU-Latin America summit.
A total of 33 countries from Latin America and the Caribbean will be attending the summit with the enlarged European Union of 25 Member States. Also taking part for the first time are Bulgaria and Romania, Croatia and Turkey.
These summits are the most important opportunities for the EU and the Latin American and Caribbean countries to meet. The parliaments from both sides have also been involved and have already had an advance meeting in Dornbirn. The President of the European Parliament, Josep Borrell, will present their common position at the summit.
