Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel, President in office of the European Council, had a meeting today with the Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.
"Our most important topic of conversation was the shape of future EU energy policy. Norway is a big player on the global energy market and a particularly important supplier of oil and gas to the European Union. We can learn a lot from one another", Schüssel said.
The EU imports 30% of its gas supplies and over 20% of its oil from Norway. That makes Norway Europe’s second biggest energy supplier and hence an important strategic partner. Schüssel: "Our goals are a more rational use of energy and an energy market that is sensibly regulated and in keeping with present-day environmental standards".
Multilateral issues and UN affairs were a further topic of discussion. Schüssel stressed Norway’s important role as a mediator in crisis regions throughout the world. Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg expressed concern at the current development in the nuclear conflict with Iran and emphasised the importance of the role of the UN in de-escalating the conflict.
