EU Sport Directors’ conference: Strengthening the sports economy in Europe

“Sport-Satellite account for complete European sports coverage!”

“It’s important to document European sport in its entirety and recognise its macroeconomic implications”, stressed State Secretary for Sport Karl Schweitzer today, at the EU Sport Directors' conference in the Vienna Hofburg. “The positive impetus given by sport ranges from value creation and employment to advertising and media markets, tourism and tax revenues. Through long-term and well-organised major sporting events, sport gives each country the chance to position itself internationally together with image-building and self-promotion possibilities.

In accordance with the “Magglinger Declaration” of 2003, Schweitzer renewed his call to make greater use of sport in development cooperation. The aim should be to establish sport as an integral part of the national political programmes of EU Member States and create the best possible framework conditions for this. Schweitzer sees an approach to solving the problem of developing the sport economy internationally and intertemporally via the setting up of a sport-satellite account. “I see in this a realistic opportunity and an integrated approach towards presenting the value creation network of the sports sector in a macro-economic context and documenting the economic importance of sport for the entire EU area", Schweitzer stated.

On the afternoon agenda will be keynote speeches, presentations and discussions on themes concerning "Gambling monopoly and sport", "Agenda of the forthcoming Finnish EU Presidency” and “Conclusions of the Austrian EU Presidency”.
