Mainoni: Future potential in European research

Award of IST prize with Commissioner Vivane Reding in the Vienna Hofburg

"The projects nominated for the 2006 IST prize demonstrate once again the potential of European research and more particularly of the thousands of researchers. All 20 of the products and services presented merited the coveted prize for groundbreaking innovations in the information and communications technology sector (ICT)", the State Secretary for Research said yesterday at the 2006 IST prize-giving ceremony in the Vienna Hofburg.

Together with Vivane Reding, the European Commissioner responsible for telecommunications, Mainoni presented the prestigious trophy to the three winners selected by the jury. "Research is the key factor for economic growth and prosperity. The EU and Austria have already recognised this and created the necessary environment for research. In Austria alone, expenditure on research and development has doubled in the last ten years", Mainoni said.

Winners of the IST prize yesterday were projects from France, the Netherlands and Denmark, each of which was awarded 200 000 euros. Advestigo (France) developed a new copyright system for encryption of multimedia data. The Netherlands company Cavendish Kinetics received its prize for a new, very fast memory technology. Guardia from Denmark - the third prize-winner - received the award for a 3D conditional access system.
