State Secretary Hans Winkler met the Peruvian Foreign Minister Oscar Maúrtua de Romaña for talks in Brussels today. The talks focused on the forthcoming EU Latin American summit, which will be held in Vienna from 11 to 13 May, and the domestic situation in Peru with regard to the approaching presidential elections.
“The EU is the leading investor and also the most important trading partner in many Latin American countries. Broadening and deepening our relations, also with the Andean Community, of which Peru is a member, is our common aim and concern”, stated the State Secretary. “In May, Vienna will host the fourth EU-LAC (Latin America/Caribbean) summit, which will be the first to be held outside the Iberoamerican area. The summit will cover a broadly diversified range of topics, including democracy and human rights, the common efforts to combat drug trafficking and international crime as well as topics such as the environment and migration. Intensive preparations are still being made in order to achieve a result from the summit negotiations which is progress-oriented and beneficial to both parties”, explained Winkler.
“I am particularly pleased about the announced participation of the Peruvian President, Alejandro Toledo”, the State Secretary said. “The meeting of numerous heads of state and government at the EU-LAC summit could also be of particular importance for Peru, which has already expressed its willingness to host the next EU-LAC summit.”
