The European Union expresses concern at the events surrounding the obstruction of the 6th congress of the Ligue Tunisienne de droits de l’Homme (LTDH) on 27-28 May 2006 in Tunis.
The European Union hopes that the Ligue will be able to resume its normal functions as soon as possible. The European Union regrets that European representatives, notably the representative of the European Parliament, Mrs. Helène Flautre, have been subjected to harassment by the security forces.
The European Union expects that the EU-Tunisia Sub-Committee on human rights and democratisation will be established as soon as possible and that Tunisia will respond favourably to the proposals made by the European Commission in this regard.
The EU has raised this matter with the Tunisian Foreign Minister in Tunis on 5 June 2006. In its statement before the European Parliament on 13 June 2006, the Austrian Presidency of the EU has also reiterated the importance the European Union attaches to the implementation of Tunisia’s commitments to the protection of human rights, good governance and democracy in the framework of the European Neighbourhood Policy Action Plan.
