Gas dispute Russia – Ukraine: Foreign Minister welcomes resumption of negotiations between Moscow and Kiev

Vienna (OTS) - The Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Mikhail Fradkov has written to Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel about Russian gas supplies to Europe.

In his letter, Prime Minister Fradkov informed the Austrian Presidency of the EU of the Russian Federation’s position in this matter. He confirms that, in the interests of strengthening the security of Europe’s energy supplies, Russia will scrupulously honour all existing agreements on supplies of natural gas from Russia with its partners in the EU and with other European countries.

The Presidency is maintaining direct contact with Russia, Ukraine and its EU partners on this issue. Foreign Minister Plassnik welcomed in this context the resumption of negotiations between Moscow and Kiev.

The European Commission will hold an expert meeting on natural gas in Brussels on 4 January, which will also be attended by Federal Minister Martin Bartenstein and Commissioner Andris Piebalgs.
