Vienna (OTS) – Wolfgang Schüssel, President of the EU Council, today received the leaders of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) Candido Mendez Rodriguez, President, Fritz Verzetnitsch, Vice-President, and John Monks, General Secretary, for talks in the Federal Chancellery. “One of the main themes of the Austrian EU Presidency is boosting growth and employment in Europe. We need all the stakeholders to pull together on this. That is why I am particularly keen to actively involve the European social partners with their know-how in the European agenda”, Schüssel said.
“I have asked ETUC President Rodriguez and his colleagues to draw up proposals together with the employers’ representatives for a number of specific projects, such as the Services Directive and the Working Time Directive. The European social partners’ initiatives and ideas can also make a key contribution to safeguarding the future of the European way of life and establishing a good balance between performance and social security“, so Schüssel.
The results of the European social partners’ work will be discussed at the social summit in the run-up to the March European Council.
