Haubner: Reducing youth unemployment will be theme for EU summit

“Young people are the potential for the future and our most valuable resource, that is why their place in the Lisbon employment goals must be recognised here and now”, Youth Minister Haubner said on Thursday at the beginning of the Education, Culture and Youth Council.

Combating youth unemployment, promoting the compatibility of family and working life and improved recognition for non-formal and informal learning are important requirements which Member States now have to incorporate in the national reform programmes for growth and jobs.

The Austrian Presidency had drawn up a contribution for the conclusions for the spring Council on the basis of preparatory work at European level. The objective is to implement the European Pact for Youth and thus involve youth in all relevant policy areas.

“We also need to change attitudes in society. Young peoples’ needs must be taken seriously.” Moreover, according to Minister Haubner: “Young people need support in making the transition from school to working life. Their employability must be improved, without stifling their creativity and individuality. Greater recognition for non-formal and informal learning in particular can be helpful in this respect.”

The European Pact for Youth and its implementation will also be a topic for discussion at the conference of European Youth Ministers on 29-31 March in Bad Ischl.

"We Youth Ministers have a particular responsibility for giving the European Youth Pact a higher profile at all levels“, she concluded.
