Plassnik rejects the “appalling” statements of the Iranian President

The EU is determined to pursue its efforts “for a dialogue between the cultures that is characterized by mutual respect”.

Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik has vigorously rejected renewed attempts by the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to deny the crimes of the holocaust as well as his demand to “remove” the State of Israel from the map.

“The fact that such completely unacceptable statements are continuously repeated should not make us acquiesce. These statements are, and they remain, appalling”, said Plassnik.

“These statements are furthermore in complete contradiction with the efforts being made by numerous political and religious leaders who, after the events of the last few days, are working on all sides for a dialogue between the cultures that is characterized by mutual respect“, added Plassnik.

“The European Union is also determined to pursue these efforts“, the President of the Council of the EU emphasized. “In the Middle East there can only be one answer for the future: a peaceful co-existence of Israelis and Palestinians, without violence and terror and on the basis of a two-state solution as envisaged in the Middle East Roadmap”, Minister Plassnik concluded.
