According to Federal Minister Elisabeth Gehrer at a press conference today, Friday, the allocation of the 54 billion euros in research funding to the individual sub-programmes is within reach. This was a historic opportunity, she said, to conclude the EU’s biggest research funding programme under the Austrian Presidency. “Following today’s meeting, I am very confident we will get an agreement among the Member States in June.” Gehrer also underlined Austria’s enormous successes in research. "Investing in research today means creating secure jobs for tomorrow.”
She said the European Research Ministers' intensive discussions in Graz had brought agreement on the distribution of the funding from the 7th EU Framework Research Programme within reach. “I am fully confident we can get an agreement among the EU Member States during the Austrian Presidency.” She described the Commission’s proposal to make available more than 32 billion euros for the 'Cooperation' pillar (promotion of transnational research projects) as a “good basis”. The 'Ideas' sector, which covers support to basic research through a newly created European Research Council, is scheduled to receive 7.5 billion euros. The 'People' sector, which concerns training and mobility of researchers, will receive around 5 billion euros. Approximately 4.2 billion euros will be available in the 'Capacities' programme for support for SMEs and improved research infrastructure.
