The subsidiarity conference taking place today and tomorrow in St. Pölten is being organised by the Austrian Presidency of the EU together with the Austrian Parliament and the Bundesland Lower Austria in the context of the debate on the future of Europe. Representatives of the EU Member States and the EU institutions are discussing how more effective application of the subsidiarity principle can help bring Europe closer to its citizens.
“This issue is part of the overall debate on the future of Europe. At this conference, we are examining what role can best be assumed by the regions and nation-states and what role is best left to the Union. We want to address the public’s concerns and fears and answer their questions”, Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel said.
Schüssel said there is a need to counter fears of a creeping centralisation of Europe, which had surfaced in the referendums in the Netherlands and France. “We need stronger regions and stronger local authorities as a counterweight. On the European Commission’s initiative, we will also discuss better regulation and weeding out regulations that are no longer necessary. We want to make the debate on the future of Europe more concrete. We are striving to achieve a new balance and trying to make the added value of the Union more tangible."
