A Stabilisation and Association Council meeting with Croatia took place today in the margins of the General Affairs and External Relations Council. It was attended by Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik in her capacity as Council Presidency.
The purpose of the meeting was to exchange information on the status of the accession negotiations and the implementation of the EU-Croatia Stabilisation and Association Agreement, which entered into force on 1 February 2005.
"Croatia has shown the EU that it is willing and able to undertake the necessary reforms in the area of justice, lawmaking and administration. The reforms carried through to date are encouraging and the screening process, i.e. the comparison of Croatia’s body of law with that of the EU, is also proceeding according to plan. Croatia is therefore on the right road", Plassnik said.
“With the launch of accession negotiations, Croatia is also setting an example for the whole region. However, this historic achievement also presents a constant new challenge to persist on the courageous road to reform. Croatia’s progress towards the EU will continue to depend on its achievements in meeting the conditions and requirements set out in the Copenhagen criteria and in the framework of the stabilisation and association process. The EU will continue to monitor Croatia’s progress closely.”
An agreement was also signed at the meeting on security procedures for the exchange of confidential data between the EU and Croatia. "This lays a foundation permitting closer cooperation specifically in the important area of security", Minister Plassnik concluded.
