Following tough negotiations, the Austrian Presidency of the EU has reached agreement with the European Parliament on the EU’s multiannual budget for the period 2007-2013. Under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Karl-Heinz Grasser, a provisional agreement was reached late on Tuesday evening in Strasbourg. The compromise must now be approved by the EU Member States and by a majority of MEPs.
The EU budget has been increased from 862 billion euro to 864 billion euro. An additional 2 billion euro is to be made available outside the budget. "The Presidency has done a good job on this important part of our work", Minister Grasser commented.
