The European Union wishes to express its concern following the violent clashes between the Guinean law enforcement authorities and demonstrators, which left several people dead and many wounded in Conakry and other areas.
The European Union joins in the appeal by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to all social and political circles in the country to pursue a constructive dialogue in order to meet the challenges facing the country.
The European Union will continue to follow the situation in Guinea very closely and remains willing to lend its support to preparation for the general elections to be held in 2007.
The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration.
* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
