The Presidency of the European Union views with deep concern the latest postponement of the presidential and parliamentary elections. The repeated changes to the electoral calendar could undermine the confidence of Haitians in the process as a whole.
The Presidency of the European Union calls on all those involved in organising the electoral process to assume their responsibilities. All necessary steps must be taken swiftly to guarantee the holding of credible, transparent and undisputed elections with a high participation rate by Haiti's citizens. The Presidency supports the setting of a precise timetable for the entire process of electoral preparation that takes account, among other things, of logistical and technical aspects in order to monitor its effective implementation.
The Presidency of the European Union is equally concerned about the deterioration of the security situation in Haiti. Security is crucial to the holding of free and fair elections. In this context, the Presidency considers that cooperation between Haiti’s National Police Force and MINUSTAH should be further intensified and strengthened.
The Presidency of the European Union recalls the importance of respect for the principle of good governance as an indispensable framework to set the country firmly on the path to peace and prosperity.
