UNIDO has been based in Vienna since it was established in 1966.

UNIDO, which became the 6th United Nations specialised agency in 1985, focuses its efforts on alleviating poverty and promoting growth in productivity. UNIDO promotes environment-friendly industrialisation in Third World countries and in the countries of Central and Eastern European with economies in transition by providing technical assistance and consultancy as well as through research and study programmes. It also promotes industrial co-operation between developing and industrialised countries.
